National Preparedness Month: It’s Time to Make a Plan
September 9, 2021
Every September, National Preparedness Month is an opportunity to remind REALTORS® and their clients about the importance of preparing ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. While disasters can occur unexpectedly, there are a few simple, proactive steps you can take to help ensure you and your loved ones are ready.
- The name of the game is planning. Make the time to create emergency plans, and don’t keep them to yourself. Be sure you, and all those who live in your household, are aware of the procedures they’ll need to take in the face of potential disasters.
- Take time to learn lifesaving skills, such as CPR and first aid, NOW. It’s critical that you learn life-saving procedures before you actually need to use them. Has it been a while since you’ve attended a training? Prioritize brushing up on your safety know-how by enrolling in another course. Did you know the Red Cross offers an easy search to find local in-person AND online trainings?
- Check your insurance policies and coverage for any hazards you could potentially face (e.g., floods, earthquakes, tornados). Are you prepared financially to face any costs associated with damage from these disasters? If not, start preparing today.
- While they aren’t skills we need often, learning how to perform practical safety steps, such as turning off your home’s gas and water, could come in handy if you find yourself in the midst of a disaster.
If you’re looking for a way to help those facing loss in the wake of a disaster, we encourage you to donate to the Virginia REALTORS® Disaster Relief Fund.
