While it is a time for generally warm weather, an abundance of cookouts, and time off from work for many, let us remember the real reason for Memorial Day—honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation.

You probably know that Virginia has a rich military history and culture; we have been involved with and leading the way in every conflict. But did you know that Virginia was home to nearly 12,000 men and women who lost their lives in combat? Through a beautiful etching of their names in glass and stone, these Virginians are honored in the Shrine of Memory (pictured above) at the Virginia War Memorial—our state’s premier military history museum and educational facility.

So, how can REALTORS®do a little bit more” this Memorial Day and honor our fallen servicemembers?

  • First, take a break from all of the festivities and have a moment of silence for these men and women, as well as their families.
  • Second, thank a service member or veteran for his or her service. While Memorial Day is dedicated specifically to those who lost their lives, it is never too much to thank someone who has worn—or is currently wearing—the cloth of our country.
  • Third, visit or make a plan to visit the Virginia War Memorial. It is home to a tremendous wealth of artifacts, interactive teachings, and overall history. Entry into or on the memorial grounds is free to the public.
  • And lastly, if you have time, check out the Commonwealth of Virginia’s 65th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 31st at 10:00 a.m. For those who live in the Richmond area and/or feel comfortable attending in person, the event will be held at the Virginia War Memorial. A virtual viewing of this ceremony will also be available. Additional ceremonies usually occur around the Commonwealth.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, and be safe!
