Proposed Code of Ethics Changes
October 22, 2020
The National Association of REALTORS® has announced proposed changes to the Code of Ethics and the Code of Ethics and Arbitration Manual that will be voted on at the NAR Board of Directors (BOD) meeting on November 13th.
The NAR BOD will consider the Code of Ethics’ applicability to discriminatory speech and conduct. If passed, these recommendations would prohibit REALTORS® from using harassing speech, hate speech, epithets, or slurs based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity in any context.
In order to fully understand the nature of the recommendations and the rationale, we encourage you to:
- Read the comprehensive materials available on this page of our web site.
- Attend the Professional Standards Forum at the virtual REALTORS® Conference & Expo, taking place on Monday, November 2nd at 11:00 a.m. ET.
- Direct any specific questions or feedback to professionalstandards@nar.realtor.
NAR is soliciting feedback, including questions and comments, on the proposals at professionalstandards@nar.realtor. As it is prescribed in the Preamble of the Code of Ethics, REALTORS® are zealous to maintain and improve the standards of their calling and share with their fellow REALTORS® a common responsibility for its integrity and honor. We look forward to a productive and civil deliberation on these recommendations … because that’s who we are!
