Fighting for Fair Housing

Over the years, Virginia REALTORS® has been at the forefront of advocating for fair housing, which is a fundamental right for all individuals to have equal access to housing in the commonwealth and throughout the nation. These efforts have led to the passage of several laws that promote fair housing practices here in Virginia.

In 2020, VAR supported the passage of several bills that strengthened fair housing laws in the commonwealth. One prohibits discrimination based on source of funds. This means that landlords cannot refuse to rent to tenants based on their source of funds, including housing vouchers, social security, or child support.

Another important bill that the Virginia REALTORS® supported prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This bill ensured that all individuals, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, have equal access to housing opportunities.

In tandem with these legislative efforts, Virginia REALTORS® also provides fair housing training to its members. This training helps REALTORS® better understand fair housing laws and practices, helping them to provide equal housing opportunities to clients.

Virginia REALTORS® has consistently been instrumental in advocating for fair housing practices in the commonwealth. REALTORS® in Virginia are committed to advocating for fair housing practices. Their efforts will ensure that all people have equal access to housing opportunities in the commonwealth.
