What You Need to Know About Short-term Rentals
July 21, 2017
Does your locality have an ordinance requiring the registration of short-term rentals?
If so, you and your clients are exempt.
Your locality may be considering an ordinance that would require property owners to register their property with your locality if the property is rented for less than 30-days at a time, otherwise known as a short-term rental.
Specific language passed during the 2017 General Assembly states that a person who is licensed by the Real Estate Board or a property owner who is real estate licensee does not need to register a short-term rental if the locality otherwise requires it.
What does that mean for you? Huge value for your clients.
Tell your owner clients about this exemption in case a locality contacts them about registering a short-term rental. The Virginia REALTORS® staff is working with local governments across the commonwealth to make sure there is awareness of this distinction.

Excellent news! Thank you for supporting the benefit of Realtors handling short-term rentals. These prejudicial requirements are an unnecessary burden on property owners, especially in areas where tourism is an important dynamic in the economy.
