Criteria:

  • Disaster: property damage due to severe weather from Hurricane Helene.
  • Open to any homeowner or tenant living in Giles County, Grayson County, Smith County, Tazewell County, Washington County, Wythe County, City of Galax, or any other jurisdiction covered by FEMA-4831-DR Declaration. Please note, to be eligible you must reside in one of the designated areas identified by FEMA. You can find FEMA’s official statement here.
  • Recipient is a full-time resident and US citizen or legally admitted for residence in the United States.
    • Conditions: Each applicant must demonstrate they have suffered property damage to their residence & either:
      • Filed a claim with their insurance company (homeowners or renters) where the funds will be used to cover the deductible for their insurance policy
      • Purchased materials or hired a contractor where the funds will be used to repair documented property damage
  • Type of assistance:
    • Insurance deductible: Insurance deductible for claims for damage to the residence related to the disaster, up to $1,000. Note that proof of an insurance claim filed with homeowners or renters insurance must be provided.
    • Purchase Materials or hire a contractor: Funding home repairs for damage related to Tropical Storm Helene. Funds up to $1,000. Note: Receipts with proof of purchase materials or repair estimates from the contractor must be provided.
    • Other: If the property is not insured or insurance will not cover the claim, assistance may be available.
  • Deadline for applications: December 15, 2024.
  • Required documentation:
    • Photo identification to show proof of residency (drivers license or other governmental documentation evidencing residency)
    • Copy of mortgage statement/mortgage payment coupon, copy of rent statement/lease agreement, or copy of insurance claim filed (as appropriate)
    • Proof of damage to primary residence (e.g., photos of damage; insurance estimate; copy of written claims, settlement proceed or claim status reports; and/or copy of all repair estimates from contractors)
  • Other restrictions:
    • Limit: one award per property
    • Applications processed on a first-come, first-served basis for completed applications
    • Applications will be processed if received by the application deadline, or funding runs out, whichever is first
