The votes are still being tallied in parts of the West, but the 2024 Presidential race is complete! Control of the House of Representatives is still to be determined, though Republicans are likely to retain control, while the United States Senate has flipped from a Democrat to a Republican majority. At the top of the ticket, former President Donald J. Trump was re-elected with 312 electoral votes and the first Republican to win the popular vote in twenty years.

In Virginia, one U.S. Senate seat and all 11 Congressional Districts were also on the ballot. For the Senate, REALTOR® champion Senator Tim Kaine was re-elected by nearly ten points. Three of the Congressional districts were open seats, VA-05, VA-07, and VA-10. In VA-05 and VA-10, REALTORS®  supported successful candidates John McGuire and Suhas Subramanyam, respectively, in their successful election efforts. With the expected close nature of the race, VA-07 did not have an endorsed candidate. REALTORS® also provided independent expenditures for Senator Kaine, Rep. Jen Kiggans (VA-02), and Rep. Don Beyer (VA-08), helping each member to re-election. All told, going into election night, Democrats held 6 Congressional seats to Republicans’ 5; those results stayed the same at the end of the evening.

As we await final results to better understand the makeup of Congress for the next two years, it is worth noting that we must also begin to prepare for 2025, when Virginia’s three statewide offices, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General, as well as all 100 members of the Virginia House of Delegates will be contested in the November General election. It is now more important than ever to register to Vote, Act, and Invest. Remember, REALTORS®, your vote is your voice and when we work together to elect REALTOR® champions, we all WIN!
