Our 2022 Legislative Agenda Passed… Now What?
March 25, 2022
Now that our Legislative Agenda has passed the General Assembly by 1,386 “yes” votes to only four “no” votes, are we done?
Not quite.
After legislation passes the General Assembly, everything is sent to Governor Glenn Youngkin for his administration’s review. The Governor has approximately 30 days to decide to approve, amend, or veto any piece of legislation.
Fortunately for us, we’re not anticipating any vetoes this year.
If the Governor signs a bill into law, then it becomes effective on July 1st, unless a different date is set in the underlying legislation. If the Governor has amendments, those bills are sent back to the General Assembly for additional consideration when the legislature reconvenes on April 27th.
The House and Senate can accept the Governor’s amendments and pass the legislation into law or reject the amendments, forcing the Governor to either approve or veto the final legislation.
In addition to this normal process, the General Assembly also returns to Richmond on April 4th in a Special Session to see if they can find a compromise on Virginia’s $167 billion two-year budget.
As you can see, there is still work to be done before we wrap up the new laws for 2022. Our team will continue to provide updates as the process progresses. Feel free to email us at advocacy@virginiarealtors.org if you have any questions.
