There’s one more week to go in the 60-day General Assembly Session, and we are wrapping up work on some final pieces of legislation.

Five out of six of our Legislative Agenda initiatives have passed both the House and Senate.  A Conference Committee of delegates and senators is making final amendments to the Association Health Plan bill before its final passage next week. You can find out more about our Legislative Agenda on the Virginia REALTORS® website.

The next step is for legislation to be sent to the Governor for his consideration.  The Governor can take four basic actions on bills that reach his desk:

  1. He can sign the bill into law. Most new laws go into effect on July 1st of the same year unless otherwise specified in the language of the bill.
  2. He can allow the legislation to become law without his signature.
  3. He can make amendments to the legislation, which the General Assembly will have to approve or reject.
  4. He can veto the legislation, which the General Assembly can sustain or reject.

For most bills, the Governor has 30 days to review and act on the proposals. The General Assembly then reconvenes on April 22nd to consider the Governor’s actions and finalize legislation for the year.
