The Fair Housing Act: Continuing the Commemoration

April 11, 2018 marked the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act: the legislation that protects people from discrimination when they are renting, buying, or securing financing for any housing. The prohibitions specifically cover discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability and the presence of children. In Virginia, “elderliness” is also a protected category.In commemoration, the National Association of REALTORS® created a multitude of resources to help REALTORS® across the country learn more about the law and about the arduous journey it took to get the legislation signed. Now that April has ended, Virginia REALTORS® encourages its members, and all individuals interested in Fair Housing, to continue the commemoration by taking advantage of these valuable resources from NAR. A commitment to equality stands as a core pillar of the REALTOR® culture. You can honor that commitment, and the legacy of those who persevered to make Fair Housing a legal requirement in the U.S., by taking a look at the resources below.
