What are the Proposed Changes?

The Virginia REALTORS® Board of Directors recommends the following actions:
  • Enable the Membership to Elect Board Members. Instead of relying on a small group to elect our Directors, Virginia REALTORS® recommends having YOU, our members, vote on a slate of nominees. These nominees will be recommended by a nominating committee, using a process similar to hiring a CEO, to ensure the board represents the broad breadth of experience, skills, and diversity that will best serve you, our membership.
  • Reduce the minimum size of the VAR Board. Virginia REALTORS® recommends changing the size of its Board to “no less than 15” instead of the current requirement of “no less than 25.” The ability to reduce the Board size ensures our Board remains nimble, more cost effective, and responsive in these uncertain times.
  • Modify How Bylaws are Amended. Currently, repealing or amending association bylaws requires the ratification of the Delegate Body which is not a body elected by the general membership. Virginia REALTORS® recommends reserving that authority for our Board of Directors who will be directly elected by our members. Aligning the authority of amending the bylaws of the Association with the Board, which has the legal responsibility to govern the association, allows the Board the autonomy needed to better represent and meet the needs of its members.
  • Allow Electronic Voting. Virginia REALTORS® recommends allowing members to cast their votes DIRECTLY via electronic voting. Currently, members must vote via proxy OR attend an in-person meeting to vote directly. We want to streamline voting, making it as efficient and simple as possible for our members to participate in the governing process of our state association. It is time to modernize and let all members have a direct voice.
