REALTOR® Champion Spotlight: George Barker – Senate District 36
June 8, 2023

When it comes to being named a REALTOR® Champion, fewer are more worthy of the accolade than Senator George Barker. Elected in 2008, Senator Barker represents Senate District 36 which includes parts of Fairfax and Prince William Counties, and part of the City of Alexandria. During his time in office, Barker has had a proven record of support for REALTOR® legislative priorities.
Senator Barker has fought to improve schools, make Virginia a veteran-friendly state, improve transportation (especially when it comes to mitigating traffic congestion in Northern Virginia), and develop solutions to allow for more affordable housing options in the commonwealth.
Most notably though, Senator Barker utilized his experience and background in the healthcare industry to spearhead the initiative to allow association health plan legislation to pass in Virginia. For four years, Barker carried the legislation required to get this key REALTOR® initiative across the finish line. This even included standing against a Governor of his own party affiliation! In 2022, the bill officially became law in Virginia, advancing the opportunity to offer healthcare plan options to thousands of REALTORS® statewide.
