Summer Fun, Safe Homes: Security Tips for the Season
August 11, 2025

Warm weather means open windows, vacations, and more time outdoors—but it can also mean more opportunities for break-ins. Help your clients enjoy a worry-free summer with these simple, effective home security tips.
Smart Devices
There is so much technology available today that safety in your home can be smart, too! A variety of brands offer doorbell cameras and cameras for other areas around the home that include motion detection and can be monitored on an app. Smart locks are also available that can be easily installed on exterior doors so you can use a code or an app to get into the home instead of a key. If you or your clients want to take safety up a notch, you can consider finding a whole-home security system, too.
Secure Outdoor Spaces
If anything is stored outside the home, it’s important to keep valuables locked up when not in use. Consider adding a low-cost lock to things like storage containers (from small containers to sheds), bikes, or grills. Even if you don’t utilize them every day, it can be great for when you go on vacation. To keep an extra eye on your outdoor valuables, you could also add motion-activated lights in dark areas.
Create the Look
If you’re returning to the office full time or taking a long vacation, you can keep your home safe simply by making it look like someone is still home (when you aren’t!). Install more smart devices like lights to turn on at times you’re away or even put the timer on the television. Seek out a favor from a neighbor to bring in mail for you while you’re gone. It’s also not a bad idea to always get to know your neighbors and any contractors you use for your home as an added security measure.
Check Your Hardware
A summer maintenance and security tip all in one—take some time to go around your house and check that doors and windows are secure. Make sure nothing has gotten loose or broken down throughout the winter months. Check the locks and reinforce any gaps where needed. Always remember to close and lock doors and windows when you’re not home, even if it will be a short trip.
These tips can help serve as a reminder to go around the home and check areas for security. No matter the season, your clients can rely on you for their homeownership needs.
