The VRLTA & Your Business
April 18, 2023

The Virginia REALTORS® team advocating on behalf of all REALTORS® has guided and monitored the Virginia Residential Landlord Tenant Act (VRLTA) over the course of its existence to ensure that both landlords and tenants are protected. The VRLTA provides a framework for both landlords and tenants to operate within, and it outlines the rights and responsibilities of both parties. Since its inception, the VRLTA has undergone several changes and updates to reflect the changing needs of tenants and landlords in Virginia, and our Government Relations Team works to keep YOU updated.
Some recent changes that have occurred are the addition of several protections for tenants, including the requirement that landlords provide a written lease to their tenants, the inability of landlords to retaliate against tenants who assert their rights under the VRLTA, and requirements to disclose mold in any rental property. These changes are essential for you to know as soon as they happen, so you follow the law in all your transactions with tenants. THIS is exactly why our team is here to keep you in the know.
The VRLTA provides a clear and predictable legal framework for rental transactions. REALTORS® can use it to help their clients understand their rights and responsibilities as landlords or tenants. The VRLTA can also help REALTORS® avoid potential legal disputes by providing a set of rules that both parties must follow. Make sure you are familiar with the VRLTA and stay updated with any changes so you can best serve your tenants AND your business.
